The Dutch colonial government recognizes the beauty of Semarang. Department of Tourism, the Dutch Indies government had publish a travel guide book. In the book, Semarang was known by the name Costa Brava van Java. Costa Brava is a tourist place in Europe which is visited during the holidays.

In history, the rivers in Semarang are very important to created the beauty of the city and to give benefit to the society in Semarang. For example, River of Banjir Kanal Barat, River of Banjir Kanal Timur, Werok river in near Kota Lama, and Banger River on Jalan Kaligawe. At that time, the fishermen can bring their boats out of the sea through Werok rivers in the Old City (Kota Lama). Then, they sell fish at Pasar Johar.

In my opinion, the rivers in Semarang need to be cared. They can be used as an alternative tourist place. If the river are normal, they can reduce the flood. In Indonesia, the river becomes a center of culture. Because, foreign cultures will enter through the inland waterway transportation. Indonesian societies really need the river.
